Gavin McArdle is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the Programmable City Project. Currently, Gavin is involved in developing accessible dashboards for city data. The dashboards will be used for analysing population, business, economy and environmental data as well as real-time data such as the status of the transport network, weather and human activity levels in a city.

Gavin’s background is in computer science and he received a BSc degree in computer science in 2003 from University College Dublin. In 2008 Gavin completed his PhD degree in the School of Computer Science and Informatics in UCD where he investigated the benefits of using collaborative and virtual reality environments for learning, collaborating and socialising online. In June 2008 Gavin began a postdoctoral position at UCD, where he investigated map personalisation by utilising user preferences. Since June 2010, Gavin has been a postdoctoral researcher at the National Centre for Geocomputation at  Maynooth University. His research interests primarily relate to understanding how humans interact with spatial data and their spatial environment.  Gavin has researched techniques for the geovisual analysis of movement data, personalised location based services, predicting human mobility in an urban environment and analysing city data.

Gavin is engaged in the EU Cost Actions MOVE and ENERGIC which are related to his research.  Additionally, Gavin is an SFI funded Research Fellow at IBM Smarter Cities Research Lab in Dublin where he is investigating aspects of human mobility in cities.  Details of Gavin’s past research and a full list of publications can be found at http://gavinmcardle.com/.
